Polygons - 5 Commonly Tested Questions

In this section, we will go through five commonly tested types of polygons that frequently appear in exams. For each type, we will examine their key properties, such as the number of sides, angle relationships, and important formulas. We will also look at typical exam-style questions to help you recognise question patterns and apply the correct methods accurately and efficiently.

Type 1: Interior vs Exterior Angle

The exterior angle of a regular polygon is \(\frac{1}{4}\) of its interior angle. Find the number of sides of the polygon.

Type 2: Sum of Interior Angle

Two of the interior angles of an octagon are 130° and 125°. The remaining interior angles are \(x°\) each. Find the value of \(x\).

Type 3: Sum of Exterior Angle

If an exterior angle of an octagon is 66° while the other exterior angles are each equal to \(x^\circ\), calculate the value of \(x\).

Each interior angle of a regular polygon is 168°. Find the number of sides of the polygon.

Type 5: Diagram Question

The first four types of questions do not involve diagrams. The fifth type is a polygon question that includes a diagram. Here is the question: The diagram shows part of a regular polygon with n sides. Each interior angle of this polygon is 156°.
  1. Find \(\angle BCA\)
  2. Find \(\angle CDA\)
  3. Find the value of n
