Number Sequence - Example 1 to 4

In this course, we will go through four examples on number sequences. Each example is carefully chosen to help students practise and strengthen their skills in identifying the type of sequence—whether it is linear, quadratic, or cubic.

Through these examples, you will learn how to:

  • Recognise the pattern by examining differences between terms,
  • Determine the correct type of sequence, and
  • Apply the appropriate formula to find the general term or the next terms in the sequence.
Related Lessons:

Number Sequence Example 1

Study the following sequence of numbers: 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, 42, …..
  1. Write down the next number
  2. Write down the nth term
  3. Write down the 170th term

Number Sequence Example 2

Write down nth term of the following sequence

40, 28, 18, 10, 4, …….

Number Sequence Example 3

The first 4 term of a sequence are  \(-\)2, 1, 4 and 7.
  1. Write down the next two terms of this sequence.
  2. Write down an expression for the nth term of this sequence in terms of n.
  3. Which term is the number 259?

Number Sequence Example 4

Rectangles are placed to enclose numbers in the number array as shown in the diagram above.

The sum of the numbers in the first rectangle, \(S_1=1=1^2\).

The sum of the numbers in the second rectangle is,

\(S_2=1+2+2+4=9=3^2\)

  • Find \(S_3\) and \(S_4\).
  • Find the formula for \(S_n\) in terms of n.
  • The sum of the numbers in the kth rectangle is 44100. Find k.
