Percentage - Remainder
In this percentage remainder course, we will learn the concept of remainder and how it is applied in percentage-based problems. This course builds on the concepts covered earlier, combining them into this remainder course.
To help you understand the concept clearly, we will go through three examples that demonstrate how remainders are used in different scenarios, with step-by-step explanations to guide your learning.
Remainder Example 1
John spends 40% of his monthly salary on food, 20% of the remainder on transportation and saves the rest. If he saves $960 per month, what is his monthly salary?
Remainder Example 2
- How many pies did Michelle give her neighbour?
- Express the remaining number of pies as a percentage of the number of pies her children ate.
Remainder Example 3
A book publisher produced a book which sold at $10.20 per copy. The publisher agreed to pay the author:
- 7.5% of the selling price of the first 2000 copies sold,
- 10% of the selling price of the next 3000 copies sold,
- 11% of the selling price of the remainder.
a) If 5425 copies were sold.
- calculate the amount the author received,
- calculate the amount the publisher received before paying the author.
b) If production costs were $15,400, find, correct to 3 significant figures, the percentage profit made by the publisher after deducting production costs and author fees.
c) From a paperback edition which sold at $4 per copy, the author received 8% of the selling price of each copy sold. If he received $1371.20 from this edition, calculate the number of paperback copies sold.
