Mean, Median & Mode - 2 Examples

In this two examples, students will learn how to apply the concepts of mean, median, and mode to analyse data effectively. Students will also see how these measures of central tendency can be used together with Stem-and-Leaf diagrams and Dot diagrams to organise, visualise, and interpret data.

Example 1

A class of 35 students took a Science Test. The results are displayed in the dot diagram.

  1. For the whole class, write down the
    (i) modal score
    (ii) median score
  2. Using the dot diagram data, complete the single ordered stem-and-leaf diagram to represent the scores of all 35 students.

Example 2

A die was thrown 40 times and the frequency of each score was recorded in the table above.

  1. Write down the modal score.
  2. Find the median score.
  3. Calculate the mean of these scores.
  4. The die was then thrown another 20 times. The mean of these 20 throws was 3.4. Calculate the overall mean for all 60 throws.
